Radio telescopes continued
Telescopes are instruments used for viewing the
distant objects. After the
invention
of the first telescope, the area is being frequently kept
under studies and research and as a result there came up
new varieties of telescopes.
This happened to serve different uses in the
astronomical and non-astronomical areas. The widely used
ones are of the optical category and are generally
working with the help of the electromagnetic
waves.
There are more varieties coming up as the radio telescopes
and the telescopes working with the x-rays and gamma rays.
The radio telescopes use waves that fall under
the radio frequency waves of the electromagnetic
spectrum. They can collect even the data that come up
with the light from the satellite.
The data that have a radio
magnetic origin can be collected and tracked by these
types of telescopes. They usually find application in the
astronomical areas.
Karl Guthe Jansky is the inventor of the radio
telescopes. He designed it for the capturing of short
radio waves. After him, Grote Reber invented the latest
variations of dish and parabolic types of radio
telescopes.
They replaced the earlier versions in all the
areas because of the advanced functionalities that came
up with them.
The cylindrical radio telescopes can work in a
wide frequency range and are like antennas of televisions
in the appearance. The wire mesh used for the
construction mainly help in the long wave lengths in
which they are made to
function.
The dish size of these types of telescopes
greatly determines the resolution at which it can work.
This is because this type of telescopes uses a resolution
that is a function of the size of the
dish.
Big dish type radio telescopes are used to get
high steering abilities. This will help in getting large
scale steering in the telescope. There have been
different dish type radio telescopes constructed by
different countries.
Understanding the high functionalities of the radio
telescopes that are made of these big dishes, there came large
versions in this.
Radio
interferometry came with the invention of astronomical
interferometry. This is mainly made of arrays of radio
telescopes collected together with the help of optical fibers
or similar materials.
The
telescopes in an array are separated, but they are connected
with the help of the suitable materials that can bring together
the light from the entire telescopes in the
collection.
Thus
the total amount of light collected will increase and thus the
data collected as signals will increase. There will be phase
addition of the waves while they are
superimposed.
The
image quality can be varied depending on the distance of
separation between the telescopes in the
array. There are different versions of the
radio interferometer telescopes in different parts of the world
and there are also giant ones among these versions.
The radio telescopes work with the help of the
radio frequency signals. There are so many varieties and
number of telescopes in the world falling under this
category.
They usually come up as astronomical telescopes
because of the uses that they can serve in this area. The
radio telescopes are an interesting area of research for
the astronomers also.
